What is Smart-ID?

Last updated: December 09, 2020

Smart-ID is a free personal identification tool that every smartphone or tablet owner can use. It's an easy, convenient and secure way to access your e-services.

On the 8th of November 2018, Smart-ID system was upgraded to QSCD level (Qualified Signature Creation Device). This means that signatures given with Smart-ID gained the same legal standing as signatures given by hand (QES level) throughout the European Union.

More specifically: signatures given with new Qualified Smart-ID accounts registered on or after the 8th of November 2018 which have the QCP-n-qscd policy present in the end-user certificates have the same legal standing as signatures given by hand.

This makes Smart-ID both a login option and a digital signature option, as an alternative e-resident ID-card. Smart-ID is now the same level as a handwritten signature but we still don’t support it for incorporation .

Smart-ID is a suitable tool for a personal identification in online services. It is more secure and convenient than email authentication and more user-friendly than ID-card authentication.

It is a free personal identification tool that every smartphone or tablet owner can use to:

  • Sign in to Xolo Leap

  • Log in to Estonian internet banks, check your balance and making international or domestic payments

  • Digitally sign relevant documents
